The Albanese government will spend $9.5 million on “a comprehensive civics education program” providing “facts on the voice” but say it is not funding for a ‘Yes’ campaign.

The $9.5 million in funding for “public education programs” was revealed in a legislative instrument by finance minister Katy Gallagher last week.

“The program forms part of the Government’s strategy to deliver its election commitment for a referendum to enshrine the Voice. A comprehensive civics education and awareness program is needed to ensure Australians understand the facts about the Voice proposal and the referendum to make an informed choice,” an explanatory statement from the Finance Minister reads.

Delivery of the program, administered by the National Indigenous Australians Agency, which is part of the Prime Minister and Cabinet portfolio, could begin this month.

“While the program will target all Australians, specific content would be developed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, as well as for culturally and linguistically diverse audiences,” the statement reads.

The Finance Minister notes it would also help to improve understanding of the Constitution and referendum process.

But the government assures it’s not a ‘yes’ campaign, amidst the Coalition pressing for equal funding for the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ campaigns.

“This program would focus on the available facts on the Voice. It would not be a
‘yes’ campaign – but would increase understanding of the issues relating to the referendum question,” the explanatory statement reads.

The details will be provided in the October Budget.
