Water enables biological life. It also creates livelihoods. Sadly, we take if for granted, and things are changing. Urban sprawl creates complex challenges for engineers and planners. Water utilities are under pressure, not only in West Australia, but globally. This talk will explain to the layperson what changes they are perceiving in their daily lives by presenting the local experience in a global reality. While it is easy to succumb to gloom over water concerns, it is actually a good news story. In some ways Perth is a world leader, even if the local citizens don’t feel that way. This talk will enlighten the individual participant by explaining the complexity associated with achieving water security in a way that the engineer and non-engineer can understand
